Relief from chronic headache and migraines through acupuncture.
How many days in a month, or possibly even in a week, do you lose to the pain of chronic headaches or migraines? What if you could reclaim many, if not all of those days? Medications can provide relief from the symptoms, but often they do little or nothing about reducing the frequency and disruption to your life. If you are looking for alternatives to medications acupuncture can help to decrease and in some cases eliminate your headaches or migraines.

What kind of headache am I suffering from?
There are dozens of different kinds of headaches. How do you know which type you are struggling with? First, let's look at the basics.
Headaches can be defined under three categories: primary, secondary and cranial neuropathies. Primary headaches are the result of a headache disorder. The symptoms of secondary headaches are the result of another underlying condition. Examples include tumors, medications, or circulatory problems. Cranial neuropathies are the result of damage or dysfunction of one of the cranial nerves. One of the most common being trigeminal neuralgia.
Now let’s look at some specific types of headaches.

Tension headache
|
The pain of a tension headache ranges from mild to moderate discomfort. Usually both sides of the head are affected, they come on later in the day, and increased activity does not make them worse.
Acupuncture helps in multiple ways. First, it increases circulation and releases endorphins to help with the pain. It is also very relaxing, so it helps to relieve stress. Add some stretches and simple exercises to the mix with a dash of lifestyle changes and the result is relief.

Migraine
Migraines are considered a primary headache disorder and are usually much more debilitating than an average headache, lasting for hours or in some cases days. Triggers for migraines vary from person to person. Keeping a headache diary can be helpful in trying to determine what your individual triggers are.
Symptoms of migraine include: throbbing pain on one side of the head, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, aura, and numbness or paralysis of one side of the face. To treat migraine headaches with acupuncture we need to look at the whole person to see what the underlying imbalances are. Just as everyone’s triggers are different, everyone’s diagnosis will be different. By identifying the underlying disharmonies and then working to bring them into balance we will be able to treat the root of the problem. The results are fewer days disrupted and less suffering from the pain and other symptoms. |
